Monitor your app’s use

Mobile Analytics provides a number of ways that you can monitor your app’s use. You can track how many sessions are established with your app over time and how many users are using your app. You can compare the usage of your app during a current period (such as today) versus a previous period (such as yesterday). You can examine the usage of different versions of your app, or compare usage by device platform or device type. And you can view how long (on average) sessions with your app last.

You can track trends visually in graphs and drill down to see in-depth data.

With this information, you can diagnose the root cause of an error or eliminate performance bottlenecks, and in that way improve the user experience with your app. See, for example, Investigate issues in your mobile app.

Note: If you’ve added monitoring to your application, but Mobile Analytics finds no monitoring data to display, you’ll see a button labeled "I have installed the SDK and need help". Click the button. In response, the Mobile Analytics support team will be alerted regarding your issue.

Displaying session data

To display monitoring data for your app, select Analytics in the main menu of the Mobile Analytics portal. This expands the App Usage menu item in the left navigation menu and opens Sessions. (You can also view app usage by clicking the monitor icon next to your app in the App Overview page). Make sure that the application shown in the Application drop-down menu on the Sessions page is your app. If not, select it in the drop-down menu.

Here are the various ways you can view the session-related data that you can monitor. For each view, you get:

  • A graph that plots session data for given points in time during a specified time period.
  • A summary table of the session data over the time period.
  • A table that lists the raw session data over the time period captured for each point in time.
Session data view What it displays
Sessions Number of active sessions and number of users.
Sessions by App Versions Number of sessions for each version of your app.
Sessions by Config Overrides Number of sessions for each configuration specified for your app. This can include default configurations, beta test configurations, and A/B test configurations.
Sessions by Device Platforms Number of sessions for each device operating system (such as iOS or Android).
Sessions by Device Models Number of sessions for each device model (such as Apple iPhone 4g or HTC Thunderbolt).
Session Duration Average session length (in seconds).

Selecting a time period to display

Select the time period for the display by selecting one of the following buttons:

  • 1h. The previous hour. This is the default.
  • 3h. The previous three hours.
  • 6h. The previous six hours.
  • 12h. The previous twelve hours.
  • 1d. The previous day (24 hours).
  • 1w. The previous week (7 days).

For example, here is the Sessions view for an app over the previous hour.

Displaying a time comparison

You can also display a view that compares session-related data for the currently selected time period with the same period yesterday or last week. You do this by checking a “Compare with” checkbox above the graph.. For example, if the current view is for an hour, you can compare the session data with the data captured for the same hour yesterday, or the same hour last week.

Here is a display that compares session data for the previous hour with the same hour yesterday:

Examine the display for spikes or drops in sessions. Dramatic and sustained drops in sessions can indicate a problem.

Examining the session metrics summary

The session metrics summary is a table that contains the following information recorded for the current time period:

  • Total Sessions. The number of active sessions.
  • Max Concurrent Sessions. The maximum number of concurrently active sessions.
  • Avg Session Length (seconds). The average session length (in seconds).
  • Total Unique Users. The number of unique users.

If you select a “Compare with” checkbox, the summary displays two tables, one for the current period and one for the previous period.

Examining the session raw data

Below the graph and the session metrics summary, you’ll see a table that lists the data captured for each recorded point in time over the current time period. The columns of the table list the following information:

  • Timestamp. The time stamp of the data capture.
  • Number of Sessions. The number of active sessions.
  • % of Total Sessions. The percentage the total sessions that the number of active session represents.

Each of the table columns is configurable. By clicking the down arrow next to a table column heading, you can sort the data in a column by ascending or descending order, group the data in the column, or remove or re-add a column from or to the display.
